Simply Frosé

August 5, 2024

Now that it’s August, the dog days are here. I can no longer handle much sun, so I really look forward to the evenings. We are fortunate that the back garden is shaded for most of the afternoon, so it’s a pleasant place to hang out.

I had to quit drinking alcohol a few years ago due to some medication I was taking. It was so easy that I never looked back. However, I miss the interesting cocktails (martinis, especially!), so I’ve been making a point of finding innovative things to drink. I’ve come to the conclusion that there’s never been a better time to quit drinking alcohol because the selection of distilled products, hop water, bitters, de-alcoholized wine, and all manner of canned mocktails has exploded over the past few years. It’s not only been easy, but it’s been lots of fun!

So here we are with a pretty good guarantee that some of the hottest days may be yet to come and watermelon is in season. It doesn’t take a huge amount of effort to slice one of those up into cubes, take said cubes, and lay them out on a tray to freeze. You don’t need a huge watermelon to make this when one of those personal-sized ones will do.

Watermelon Frosé

Ingredients

  • 1 cup watermelon cubes, frozen
  • 1 cup de-alcoholized (or not!) rosé wine
  • Fresh mint for garnish

Process the frozen watermelon cubes in a food processor or immersion blender. When they are mostly broken down into icy bits, gradually add the wine and whiz until the mixture turns slushy.

Pour into glasses and garnish with mint and more watermelon, if desired.

Stay cool!
